The Pilates reformer uses springs, a sliding carriage, straps and pulleys for spring based resistance training. This apparatus is great for rehabilitation, athletics and everything in between.
The reformer is versatile with springs which are adjusted in tension to create the correct amount of resistance to match the student’s flexibility, strength and stamina. This versatility allows the intensity of the workout to be varied to match the needs of each student and exercise.
The reformer works muscles, including the peripheral muscles of the arms and legs, through a larger range of motion than merely using your own body weight on the mat. The reformer is ideal for building and toning muscles, while increasing flexibility.
A wide repertoire of exercises can be undertaken on the reformer, laying down, sitting or standing.
For rehabilitation, the reformer allows the design of a program of horizontal exercise. This is very beneficial as it relieves the vertical load, allowing the strengthening of muscles through controlled movement and a lighter load than the bodies’ weight for a speedier recovery.
For athletic training, the reformer improves core stabilisation, muscle strength and endurance, joint stability, balance and co-ordination.
It is a requirement that ‘Reformer students’ be of the same or similar level of competency.
A reformer class typically comprises 2 to 4 students.
